NEW YORK SEMESTER
The New York semester provides students at ANAC (Association of New American Colleges) schools with an opportunity to experience New York City from a theoretical and an experiential approach. The semester would give visiting students (we anticipate that many will initially come from ANAC schools as this program is part of an ANAC-wide domestic "study away" initiative) the opportunity focus on the unique position of New York City as a world city, including its economic, political, social, and cultural characteristics.
Offered during the spring semester, all New York Semester students enroll in
GOV 200, The Future of the City. This course, which is also the "gateway course" to the College's City Studies minor, touches on the following themes:
• Immigration
• Race/ethnicity
• Religion
• Wealth and Poverty
• The Environment
• New York After 9-11
In addition, students participating in the New York Semester program will register for 2 or 3 additional courses. These may be courses that have either a New York City or Urban theme.
Courses with a New York or urban-theme include
• Music 233, 234---Exploring Music in New York City
• Political Science 205---Urban Politics
• Political Science 207---New York Politics
• Political Science 314---The Politics of Urban Policy Development
• Sociology 302---The Urbanized Society
• Sociology 331---The Ecology of the Urban Community
