General Questions
Wagner College sits on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the New York City Harbor, has a beautiful 105-acre, park-like campus that is only a ferry ride away from the cultural, intellectual, and professional heart of America – Manhattan.  For students, this ideal location means the difference between a typical college education and an educational experience filled with exceptional learning and exciting internship and career opportunities.  For international students, our location is ideal for accessibility with our region’s three international airports, allowing the city to be the major cultural hub of the world.

New York City isn’t the only reason an international student should consider Wagner College.  Our institution offers a student-friendly campus where international students can thrive due to our small classes and individualized attention.  In addition, our safe campus provides an excellent balance between a quiet environment focused on academics with the chance to experience, intern and live in the greatest city in the world.  With Wagner’s heralded Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts, our students gain real world experience and contacts through internships specific to Wagner College at some of the top international corporations in the world.

Our commitment to cultural diversity, academic excellence and undergraduate experience has rewarded Wagner College with the honor of being the top school in the North “Up-and-Coming Schools” for the second year in a row in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2011 Annual Guide, in addition to being listed as one of the top 25 northern universities for the eighth consecutive year.  We have been identified for having “recently made the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus or facilities.”  Wagner has made the “Up-and-Comers” list every year since it was created in 2008.

The college is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Specific portions of Wagner's academic program have recognition and accreditation by national professional agencies such as the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, the National League for Nursing, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the American Chemical Society.

At the undergraduate level, nothing!  In the USA, an institution is labeled as a "college" when there are less than three Ph.D programs offered.  "Universities" have more than three.  So for students looking to get their bachelors or masters degree, title of college or university is not important.  What is important is the institution itself and what the school offers!

The current enrollment is about 1900 full-time undergraduates, and 325 in graduate study.

Absolutely!  Housing is guaranteed as long as you apply to the College as a resident student and follow our deadlines for returning the residence life forms found in our First Year Guide. You must also follow the policies of the Housing lottery each year. About 80% of our undergraduates reside on campus, and most students live in our residence halls for the four years.

Currently, business, education, psychology, and biological sciences are our top four most enrolled majors. (...but as a liberal arts college, most of our new first year students enter as "undecided").

Our student body represents 43 states in the US and 19 countries.

For the 2011-2012 school year: $35,620 for tuition, and $10,680 for room and board for undergraduate students. This includes housing and a regular meal plan. We do not have extra costs for parking, use of our sports center, technology, etc. There are additional charges for labs and studio fees in certain science, music and art classes.

Unfortunately, we do not offer English as a second language programs on campus.  We are teamed up with ELS.  With our partnership, Wagner College will accept the completion of ELS Level 112 in lieu of the TOEFL or IELTS score for a student’s English proficiency requirement.  We also offer conditional admission for students enrolling in an ELS language course.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Allen Koehler, Coordinator of International Recruitment, by email at allen.koehler@wagner.edu.

Application Questions

Information on how to apply to Wagner can be found by clicking here.  The site also includes information on our deadlines, our applications, and a checklist of what is required. We accept the Common Applicationour online applicationas well as our downloadable PDF file.  Feel free to apply with any of the three; preference is not given to one type.

There is a $75 application fee.  Checks or money orders should be payable to Wagner College and drawn on a U.S. bank. (We cannot accept international postal money orders.)   You may pay online by going to www.wagner.edu/admissions/payonline.  Application fee waivers are not accepted.

International students do qualify for scholarships.  Wagner has a merit-based system for scholarships, and these awards are based on all material submitted for admission; which includes official transcripts and test scores, class rank, letters of recommendation, personal essay, activities/extracurricular lists, and interview (recommended).

We understand that our students are applying from all over the world and English is not always the language that their recommendation letters are going to be written in!  But we still require two letters of recommendation and, if possible, in English.

Because Wagner is a competitive college, we do not have rolling admissions.  A list of our deadlines for international l students can be found by clicking here.  We begin sending decision letters for regular decision students on February 1. Early Decision students hear from us by, at the latest, January 15. Physician Assistant candidates are notified February 15.  All students are notified of their admission decision by the email they submit on their application.

You will get Wagner credit for any AP tests where you score a 4 or 5. Students who present scores of 5 or better on the IB higher level examinations may be granted advanced standing and/or credit. Wagner does not evaluate college courses for transfer unless the class was taken physically at the college or university led by a professor with other college students in attendance. Typically, courses taken before graduation from high school are not transferred over, but are usually viewed as a more challenging course by the admissions counselor. Please contact the Admissions Office directly should you have any questions.

An interview is recommended, not required. We do suggest that if you come for a tour, you also request an interview. International students can also interview over Skype.  An interview would be done after a student has completed their application.

The TOEFL or IELTS score is required for all students who's schooling is not taught in English.  The minimum TOEFL score is 79 (217 on the computer test or a 550 on the paper test) to waive our English language requirement and the minimum IELTS score is 6.5. We do not offer ESL classes on campus.

About 25% of our new first year students enter as "Undeclared" status. When you meet with your faculty advisor during orientation, you can discuss your academic interests and form your schedule from there.

Our current student teacher ratio is 13:1; our classes are taught by our professors exclusively, not graduate/teaching assistants. The average class size at Wagner is 19. A typical first-year class at Wagner has 20-25 students.

We do have graduate assistants in our academic and athletic departments, but they never teach our classes. Graduate assistants typically aid the professors with exam review, laboratory sciences, research, and general course preparation.

We do have an honors program, which is not a separate honors college but a very individualized program. Top scholarship recipients are invited to join our honors program by invitation. Click here to learn more about our honors program.

Yes! Our Center for Career Development and Experiential Learning (centrally located for easy access in our Student Union) offers everything from running seminars to prepare you for an interview to resume preparation to counseling on which position is right for your goals

We absolutely have internships! Wagner starts out with experiential learning in the first semester, and then progresses to internships, study abroad, etc. We do not have co-ops, most internships are unpaid, instead they substitute for another course at Wagner, meaning you will get course credit for internships. All seniors must complete an internship or practicum in their major area of study. For more information, please also see the Wagner Plan section of this site.

You will want to send your information to the coaches!  To do that, go to our athletic website at www.wagnerathletics.com and click on the sport you are interested in joining.  Every sport has a link called "Online Questionnaire" (which may be under the tab "Additional Links").  By filling out the questionnaire, you're indicating to the coach that you're interested in participating in that particular sport.
