Requirements for a Major in English (B.A.)
Students declaring the major from 2003 through Spring 2006 should follow the guidelines below.
A minimum of 13 units with the following distribution:
Foundation requirements - 3 units as follows:
English 110 or 111, anEd 211, 212.
Period courses (at least one British and one American) - 3 units from the following:
English 302, 304, 306, 309, 311, 314, 317, 318, 319.
Required courses - 3 units:
English 330, 400 and 425 (English 400 and 425 make up the Senior Learning Community for the major)
Elective upper-level courses - 4 units from the following:
English 203, 213, 291, 303, 310, 313, 315, 324, 325, 327, 343, 345, 347, 349, 351, 352, 353, 354, 416.
One writing course (from among journalism, creative writing, or writing intensive tutoring courses) may be substituted for an upper-level elective.
Only courses with a grade of C− or higher may be applied to the requirements of the major in English. Although the study of a foreign language is not required, students majoring in English are strongly urged to undertake such a study.

The English component of the Dual Major consists of a total of 11 units with the following distribution:

Requirements for a Minor in English
A minimum of 5 units, of which one must be a foundation course, one a period course, and three advanced elective courses.
Requirements for a Minor in Journalism
A minimum of 5 units, of which one must be English 261 and two must be the two-unit internship in journalism (English 397).
English Composition Requirement
The first writing requirement is met by successful completion of the freshman RFT course. A student who fails the freshman RFT writing component must take English 101 as the equivalent course in the spring semester following the RFT failure. Upon successful completion of English 101, the “F” earned in the RFT will become an “F/R” and will not count toward the cumulative GPA. The graduation requirement regarding the freshman RFT writing component will be met by successfully passing English 101. The student must pass English 101 before enrolling in the next writing-intensive literature course (courses designated as ”W”).
