GOV 240 "Service and Politics Abroad": The AIDS Crisis in Kenya
Spend two weeks in Kenya volunteering in an HIV/AIDS program. You have the chance to change people's lives, and most definitely, Africa will change you. You will be given significant responsibilites. For example, you might give public lectures on HIV, which dispel the many myths surrounding the disease. Or, you might provide some basic counseling and information for HIV-positive Kenyans. Due to the level of responsibility, before leaving for Africa you will be required to understand the basic medical aspects of the disease and the social context in which it exists in Kenya. Dr. Snow will assign various readings to this end.
The program is administered by Global Volunteer Network (www.volunterr.org.nz). The academic portion of the course will be a research paper on some aspect of the AIDS crisis in Africa. The class is open to all students, with permission of the instructor.
RE 591 Christians, Muslims and Jews: Toward Understanding and Peace
Learn about these three major faiths in lectures given by Professor Walter Kaelber here at Wagner. Then take an exciting, fully escorted, ten-day tour of Israel. Return to campus to participate in focus groups helping to promote dialogue and understanding. Learn from celebrated experts in the field. The escorted tour led by Wagner Professor Jeffrey Glanz and Wagner College Trustee Bishop Stephen Bouman- will visit many of the major sites of Jerusalem and the surrounding area. Meet and discuss major issues with notable religious and political leaders of all three faiths.


FR The Art of Flaneur: Paris in Literature, Art and Film
In this course, we will study how Paris has been represented in art. literature and film. We will first read a selection of literary representations of the city by the "flaneurs". After reading and analyzing a selection of their writings, we will go to Paris and be "flaneurs." We will attend walking tours of various parts of the city and visit art galleries, museums and sites of cultural interest. Uopn our return, we will complete our readings and write a research project.
Prerequisite: Intermediate French (Studies majors and French minors)
SP 241 Spanish Culture and Civilization
This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and discover a new way of life. Located in the center of the country, Madrid is one of Europe's liveliest cosmopolitan capitals. Students will have the opportunity to visit some of the city's major cultural and historical attractions including palaces, museums, popular squares, and literary cafes. The trip also includes two planned excursions: Toledo, home of the El Greco museum, and El Escorial, a breathtaking palace built by Philip II.
Prerequisite: Intermediate Spanish or high school equivalent
CH 591 Environmental Pollution and Health
The trip to Bangladesh allows you to travel and study global environmental issues at the same time. You will immerse yourself in Indian, Bengali and far eastern culture, see picturesque countryside, see the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger and see the relics from ancient India, inscriptions in Sankskrit.
This course addresses the issues of water and air pollution in third world countries with special focus on Bangladesh, where the worst mass poisoning due to natural contamination of ground water by arsenic is unfolding. Students will make field visits to affected areas to see arsenic contaminated wells, water purification systems, and life in rural Bangladesh. In addition, the course will cover household energy, indoor air pollution in rural households and its impact on child and mother health in developing nations.
