Educational Issues in a Developing Nation: Peru

Prerequisite: None, open to all majors, both undergraduate and graduate, with permission of the instructor

Wintersession 2008:  Trip to Peru         January 5-16, 2008

Are you looking for the opportunity to travel to a developing nation while learning about their culture and their educational system?  Then consider taking this course during the 2008 wintersession, which will take place in Peru.

While in Peru, students will visit, observe, and assist in instruction delivery in a pre-school located in an impoverished town in the outskirts of the capital, Lima.  The students will also attend presentations and interact with principals, educators, and families of students currently involved in the educational system of this country.  Additionally, course activities will include cultural events designed as an introduction to the richness of the Peruvian culture.  Visits to specific historic sites, as well as contemporary locations will be scheduled.

In addition to actively participating in all planned activities while abroad, students will be required to keep a daily observational journal, and complete a formal research paper in a topic directly related to the educational issues faced in Peru.  This class will meet three times (for approximately 1.5 hours each time) before departure (during the fall semester), and three times after returning to campus (during the spring semester).

The total cost of the travel will be approximately $2,250; this includes program fee, airfare, accommodations, daily meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), transportation, admission to all pre-planned cultural events, and travel insurance.

This course is open to students from all majors, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with permission of the instructor.  Those students completing a degree in education will have the option of counting the field hours completed during this trip against their program field hour requirement.
