This exciting winter session course provides students with the unique opportunity see and study some of the most important and beautiful sculpture, painting, frescoes, altarpieces, and architecture from the trecento and quattrocento (fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) We will visit churches, museums, monasteries, galleries, and public and private collections. In addition to technique and stylistic questions, we will focus on patronage, issues of civic pride, and religious symbolism. This is a special opportunity to study these works with two professors (Morowitz and Albanese) who have just completed a novel based on the life of an Italian Renaissance artist! Field trips, day trips to the smaller cities of Prato and Siena, and guided tours, are designed to maximize the students’ understanding and access to key artistic monuments.
Artists studied include: Giotto, Donatello, Martini, Duccio, Botticelli, Fra Lippi, Fra Angelico, Verocchio, Ghirlandaio, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti and Masaccio. Media include bronze sculpture, marble sculpture, fresco painting, panel painting, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture.
