Dr. Katica Urbanc |
Dr. Urbanc's research focuses on the works of modern peninsular authors, with a special emphasis on women writers. Her book Novela femenina, critica feminista: cinco autoras espanolas approaches the works of five contemporary Spanish female authors from an Anglo-American and French feminist perspective, focusing on psychological development, interior female spaces and the re-elaboration of Francoist historiography. Dr. Urbanc is the co-editor of a special edition of Letras Femeninas ("Encuentros Transatlanticos") devoted to the works of contemporary latina and peninsular women writers. She has presented papers in the US, Canada and Spain on writers Soledad Puertolas, Carmen Martin Gaite, Almudena Grandes, Carmen Laforet, and Rosa Regas. She has also interviewed several contemporary writers in Spain. At Wagner College she is the Chair of the Department of Modern Languages. She teaches French and Spanish language classes as well as upper-level courses on French women writers, Spanish culture and civilization, Cervantes, and modern peninsular prose. She also teaches a team-taught honors class with Dr. Laura Morowitz on art and literature in turn-of-the-century Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Barcelona. Dr. Urbanc was recently elected a member of the International Institute in Spain and spends two months a year in Madrid.
