Requirements for a Major in Spanish (B.A.)
A minimum of 11 units with the following distribution. In addition, all Spanish majors are required to study abroad.
- Required courses - 5 units as follows:
- Spanish 111, 112, 231, 232, 310.
- Electives - 5 units to be chosen from among the following:
- Spanish 213, 234, 241, 242, 314, 320, 323, 346, 347, 351, 352, 411, 412; Foreign Language 291.
- Senior Learning Community:
- Spanish 400 taken concurrently with one of a selection of upper-level courses offered on a rotating basis. This course includes an experiential component.

Requirements for a Dual Major of Spanish and Childhood Education
For the Education component of the Dual Major consult the Education section.
The Spanish component of the Dual Major consists of a total of 10 units including the following required courses: Spanish 103 and 104 OR 105 and 106 OR 107 OR 111 and 112, Spanish 231, 232, 310; and a choice of electives in Spanish to obtain 10 units.
Requirements for a Minor in Spanish
A minimum of 6 units in Spanish including the elementary courses. Spanish 310 is required for all minors.
General Guidelines
- Spanish 107 (Accelerated Elementary Spanish) is designed for those students who have had 0–2 years of high school Spanish. Students may take Spanish 111 after completing Spanish 107.
- Spanish 103-104 (Spanish for Teachers) is designed for students who are going into childhood or adolescent education. Spanish 103 is a prerequisite for Spanish 104. Offered in summer sessions only.
- Spanish 105-106 (Basic Intensive Spanish I, II) is a two-semester sequence designed for those with 0–2 years of previous study. Credit is given for Spanish 105 upon completion of Spanish 106.
- Spanish 111-112 (Intermediate Spanish) is designed for those students who have had either 2–3 years of high school instruction or 2–3 semesters of college Spanish. Spanish 111 is a prerequisite for Spanish 112.
- Native speakers of Spanish must begin their formal college study of the language at the 231-232–level or higher, depending on their background.
In courses listed, all courses taught in the language fulfill the International Perspectives requirement (I).
