Original Composition Competition

for High School students

The Competition in Original Composition is an effort to encourage young people

who are interested in composing music.

Rules

1) The Wagner College Composition Competition is held in the spring.  Students must submit an entry form, a score and a recorded performance of the composition.

2) The competition is limited to High-School Level students.

3) The work to be submitted is for a classical composition for acoustic instruments.

4) The composition must be for two to five instruments (or voices). 

5) The composition should be from three to five minutes in length.

6) Students must submit a score of the composition. The score should be submitted using a computer music writing program. The score should be submitted by e-mail.

7) Students must also submit a performance of the composition.  The performance may be submitted in MP3 format by e-mail or on a CD.

8) Deadline for entries is January 19.

9) A non-refundable entry fee of $37.50 must be received before the composition will be accepted.

10) There will, or may be, one First Place Winner who will receive $500.  According to Federal law no prizes may be awarded without submission of a SS#.

11) The winner should submit a picture and a Bio for posting on the web-page. The Bio may be changed, modified or updated as desired.  The picture may also be changed if desired. 

12) The winner should plan to perform the composition during the Competition Finals on May 19. Normally the composition is performed by the composer's colleagues.

13) The winner may present a performance of his/her compositions a year after winning the Competition.

 

 

Entry Form

Copy the Entry Form (from the web-site) onto Microsoft Word (but not Word Perfect), fill it out, and then send it as an attachment to Ronald Cross at the e-mail address below, along with the score of the composition.  However, your entry will not be accepted until payment of the entry fee (credit card or check) has been received.
