Undercurrents for clarinet, violin, vibraphone, bassoon, piano is a single-movement piece that contains four contrasting sections. The first section is slow and contains a constant flowing motion. The second section is twice as fast as the first, suddenly becoming mysterious and calm. Within this section, there are three frequently repeated chords, initially stated by the piano, followed by the violin as double stops . In the third section, the tempo slows down slightly, and the mood becomes jovial and light. There is a phrase of four sixteenth notes that repeats frequently and establishes an underlying unity. The final section is the fastest  of the piece, culminating in a fury of sound as the instruments reach their final gestures. Throughout the entire movement, the piece gradually grows and develops dynamically and  slowly becomes more unified.
Danielle Galler-Rabinowitz, Buckingham Browne and Nichols School, grade 11, Brookline, MA, private study with Alla Elana Cohen
Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano, Movement III (Andante Triste) Trio
Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano, a short, three-movement piece is a conversation between three distinct voices. Each instrument speaks in a similar thematic language, but differs slightly from the other voices; this difference may be in register, inversion, or retrograde. By using these specific techniques to differentiate between the instruments, the goal was to create an atmosphere that is, in a sense, polemic: although the instruments are not constantly at odds with each other, the thematic material in each movement is utilized differently by the three voices until the ear is "exhausted" by the sounds. Aside from pitch content, the piece also contains constant rhythmic repetition that continues throughout the three movements, representing the common thread between sections.
