Program Details

In order to give students the greatest possible assistance in reaching their career goals, the program has been designed to encourage students to work exceptionally hard throughout their time at Wagner College, and gain as much experience as possible. It is this commitment to hard work which will prepare you for entry into your chosen professional school.

Entry into the Pre–Professional Health Program occurs in two stages. The first stage is conditional admission, and the second stage is admission.

Typically a student will know if they wish to be in the Pre–Professional Health Program before they begin their studies at Wagner College, and they may apply for conditional admission before starting classes. A student who is already a freshman may also apply for conditional admission at any point before the end of the academic year. To apply for conditional entry the student needs to complete the Entry Questionnaire and the Letter of Release Form. Once both of these are completed and returned to the Pre–Professional Health Committee, the student will be conditionally entered into the program.

For a student to continue with the Pre–Professional Health Program, they must apply for removal of the conditional status at the end of their freshman year. The student must have demonstrated that they have the academic skills necessary to be considered as a strong candidate for a professional school. This will be evidenced by a GPA of at least 3.2, completing a self assessment essay and two letters of recommendation from Wagner Faculty (one of whom must be the academic advisor) in support of the student continuing with the program. If the student is unable to demonstrate these requirements they will be dropped from the program.

During the admitted stage (sophomore to senior) pre–medical and pre–veterinary students must have a GPA of at least at 3.5 by the end of their sophomore year and maintain this for the rest of their time at Wagner College. Also the student must demonstrate that they are successfully completing their Pre–Professional Health Program requirements by completing a self assessment essay and returning it to the committee. Students in other programs must maintain a GPA of at least 3.2. If at the end of an academic year a student has not met the requirements they will be dropped from the program.

Should a student wish to reapply to the program after being dropped, or apply after their freshman year, they must explain to the committee in writing why they should be admitted, demonstrate that they can complete all the requirements of the program and that they have the necessary academic strength. If the student satisfies the committee, then they will be conditionally entered for the rest of the academic year, and at the end of the year they must remove their conditional status by use of the method outlined above.
