Research & Teaching Interests

Nice brain!
My teaching emphasizes experimental approaches to understanding human and animal behavior.

In my research, I am interested in all aspects of eating behavior. Generally, I have focused on the underlying neural processes of behavior, perception and learning, in particular, their role in regulating eating behavior.  My research has focused on how the integration of sensory signals from the digestive system (hormones and neural signals) and the mouth (taste) in the brain affects food choice and consumption. Human perception and behavior are affected by these signals which are altered depending on the composition of food and previous experience with the food, among other factors. The biopsychological basis of learning in eating behavior is poorly understood but appears to be very influential in regulating meal size.

I am also generally interested in food choice, meal size, dietary restraint (the cognitive control of food intake that may underlie the formation of some eating disorders), and the psychopharmacology of weight gain. See the research my students have done in order to get an idea of my interests.

I also teach courses in the biopsychology major.
