Requirements for the Major in Sociology (B.A.) (Updated 2/28/08)
Core courses required of ALL majors (9 units)
- SO 101- Principles of Sociology OR SO 103 - American Society and its Social Problems
- SO 233 - Research Methods I
- SO 234 - Research Methods II (Prerequisite: SO 233)
- SO 343 - Sociological Theory
- AN 101 - Introduction to Anthropology
- One Anthropology elective
Senior Learning Community (Prerequisites: SO 233, SO 234, SO 343) consisting of:
- SO 491 - Senior Seminar
- SO 400 - Senior RFT (Was 492)
Concentration requirements (6 units)
(Note: "Elective" is any Sociology, Anthropology, or Social Work Class)
Academic Sociology
- SO 213 - Sexualities and The Social (D) OR SO 301 - The Family (D)
- SO 305 - Criminology
- 4 electives
Criminal Sociology
- SO 207 - The Criminal Justice System
- SO 305 - Criminology
- 4 electives
Family Studies/Social Work
- SO 213 - Sexualities and The Social (D)

Requirements for a Major in Anthropology (B.A.)
Please Note: The Anthropology Major requirement has been changed.
Students declaring the major Fall 2006 and after should follow the guidelines below.
Core courses required of ALL majors (5 units)
- AN 101 - Introduction to Anthropology
- AN 201 - Comparative Cultures
- AN 202 - Biological Anthropology and Human Evolution
- AN 212 - Archaeology
- SO 233 - Research Methods I
Area courses - at least 2 units chosen from:
- AN 233 - Archaeology and Cultures of Mesoamerica (I)
- AN 234 - Land of the Inca: Peru Past and Present (I)
- AN 235 - North American Indians (D)
Anthropology Electives - 2 additional units
Sociology Elective - 1 unit
Any Sociology course, but not Social work.
Senior Learning Community - 2 units

Students delcaring the major from 2003 through Spring 2006 should follow the guidelines below.

Requirements for a Dual Major of Sociology and Childhood Education (B.A.)
For the Education component of the Dual Major consult the Education section.
For the Sociology component a total of 11 units is required including: Sociology 103, 233, 301, 303, 343; Anthropology 101, 302 or 341, 331 or 232; Political Science 207 or History 225; and two electives at the 200 level or above from among those courses offered in the department.
Requirements for a Minor in Sociology/Anthropology
Any 6 units in Sociology and/or Anthropology.
