Study Abroad on a Non-Wagner Program
With pre-approval of courses and the proper forms filed in the Academic Advisement Center, the Study Abroad Office and the Registrar’s Office, students may study abroad for a summer, a semester or a year on any program accredited at another college or university. Grades will be treated as transfer credit and will not affect the student’s Wagner GPA.
During the summer, you may study abroad on any pre-approved program and then transfer up to two units of credit towards graduation. Again, courses must be pre-approved by the Registrar’s office. In addition, students must first apply for permission to study abroad from Wagner.
All study abroad fulfills the Intermediate Learning Community requirement and the Intercultural requirement. The ILC Council requires a paper to be written to reflect on ILC goals and how they were met abroad (see rubric).
Steps to follow:
- Fill out a preliminary study abroad application.
- Speak with your academic advisor and the Study Abroad Coordinator. Bring an unofficial transcript to these meetings along with the preliminary application.
- Take an official leave of absence by filling out the proper form in the Academic Advisement Center, Wagner Union. You may file for a semester or a year.
- Wagner financial aid will not apply while abroad but you must visit the financial aid office to notify the office of your plans. If you receive federal financial aid or federally-backed student loans, the financial aid office needs to establish a consortium agreement with the host institution for this aid to apply. Wagner financial aid will be reinstated once you return to campus.
5. Get course descriptions of the courses you want to take from the host institution either from the college bulletin or the Web and take these to the Registrar’s Office for pre-approval. (Form: “Pre-Approval of Transfer Credit”)
6. Fill out the “Approved Study Abroad for Wagner College Student Check-off Sheet” (aka. “the Green Sheet”) and return it to the Study Abroad Office by the last day of class.
Please note: if you make any changes in your course schedule once you arrive at your destination abroad, you must notify the Registrar’s office and the Study Abroad Coordinator via e-mail: aayers@wagner.edu or mkiss@wagner.edu and receive permission for the substitution, otherwise you will not get credit.
