DA 191 History of Dance. 1 unit. This course traces the evolution of Western dance from Primitive tribal dance through the birth of folk dance, classical and modern dance, and ballroom dance.

DA 245 Dance Exploration and Improvisation. 0.5 unit. A class designed to build the ability to move freely and create movement vocabulary. Student will work, not within a specific technique of dance, but use the somatic and kinesthetic principles of movement to create language. Dynamics of movement will be explored through use of external directives.

DA 252 Ballet II. 0.5 unit. A practical, intermediate level ballet class designed for the student who has the basic knowledge of the ballet and wishes to strengthen his or her technique. Prerequisite: DA151 or DA151B or permission of instructor.

DA 272 Modern Dance II. 0.5 units. An intermediate level dance class designed for the student who has the basic knowledge of modern dance and wishes to strengthen his or her technique and further their study of the concepts of our Modern Dance Pioneers through practical application of movement. DA 301 Musical Theatre Styles. 0.5 unit. A practical open level dance class designed to familiarize the student with the styles of dance most frequently used in Musical Theatre. Student will be taught choreography to perform in a final presentation at the end of the semester. Prerequisites: DA151, DA161, DA171, DA181 or any other higher level technique class.
DA 302 Dance Techniques I. 1 unit. A lecture class designed to teach students the understanding of dance techniques and pedagogy. Students will be taught the basic principles of kinesiology, somatic practices along with fundamental body mechanics and their application to various forms of dance. Injury prevention will also be examined.
DA303 Partnering. 0.5 unit. A practical class for the advanced level dancer to develop the techniques of shared weight and principles of classical partnering, i.e. lifts, carries and promenades. Permission of instructor required.

A practical advanced level dance class designed for the student who has the skills of modern dance and wishes to maintain his or her technique and study more eclectic and contemporary theories of movement through practical application. DA 395 Dance Criticism. 1 unit. A foundation course analyzing various types of dance performance and theories. Students will watch performances and study different types of dance weekly. This course would be multi cultural and diverse in its approach. The student will then participate in class discussions.
DA 401 Techniques of Choreography. 1unit. A comprehensive study of choreographic theory and composition. The course is designed to develop the tools for choreography. Prerequisites: TH 111, Dance 191 and two courses from the following choices: DA252, DA254, DA263, DA264, DA272, DA273 or permission of the instructor.
DA 454 Ballet IV. 0.5 unit. A practical advance4d level ballet class designed for the student who is serious about dance and has already established a strong technique while developing more advanced movement ability, performance skills and styles of ballet dance. The class will aid in preparing the student for working in the profession world of dance. Prerequisites: DA353 or DA353B or permission of instructor.

DA 495 Contemporary Dance Workshop. 0 unit. A class designed for the intermediate and advanced level dancers to work within an experimental and creative environment. The course will provide students with intensive practical experience through close work with faculty. Students will be mentored to express themselves artistically through dance and develop a contemporary form of artistic expression. Instructor permission required. Offered fall and spring semesters. Class may be repeated.

101 Communication in Society. A beginning course in the techniques and art of personal and public speech communication. Individual practice emphasized.
102 Voice and Diction. A course to give the student individual attention and practice in breath control, phonation, resonance, articulation, and pronunciation. Prerequisites Theatre 117 and for Theatre majors only or permission of instructor.
103 Public Speaking. Ideal for the Liberal Arts student, this basic speech course studies the art of public speaking from a variety of informal and formal perspectives. No prerequisites.
104 Oral Traditions and Reader's Theatre. This course gives students instruction in oral interpretative reading with a concentration in reader's theatre for children. Usually for incoming freshman only.
202 Voice and Diction II A course designed to give students advanced instruction with particular attention to character studies, dialects, and classical dramatic texts. Prerequisites Spc102 and Th217
301 Communication in the Small Group. A study of the basic speaking skills required for effective participation in small groups. Emphasis on the awareness and experience of specific settings for group communication.
303 Communication on the Job. A study of principles and techniques of communication crucial to growth and success in business and organizations. Topics include: communicating within organizational structures, conducting and participating in interviews, and nonverbal communication. Upper-class status recommended. Individual practice emphasized.
304 Stage Dialects. A speech course geared toward the advanced student actor seeking a career in Theatre. This course examines a variety of European and American dialects. Prerequisites: Speech 102 and Theatre majors only or permission of the instructor.
591 Special Topics in Speech. A flexible course, offered at various times, focusing in depth on special areas in speech.
400 Senior Seminar. This is the capstone course for Theatre Studies and D/T/M students; involves attending and writing about theatre and other performances.
417 Acting Techniques IV. A continuation of techniques developed in Acting Techniques I, II and III. Examination of acting styles required in plays of authors such as Brecht, Becket, Pinter, Ionesco, Mamet and Shepard. Emphasis is placed on rehearsal tecniques. Prerequisites: Theatre 117 and 217.
593 Independent Study in Speech and Theatre. An opportunity for advanced students independently to pursue experimental, creative projects of research with faculty guidance. Departmental permission required.
TH 595 Advanced Theatre Practicum. Senior Learning Community for Theatre Studies and D/T/M Concentration, providing senior students with intensive practical experience in multiple facets of stage production.
