Summer Music Theatre Institute at Wagner College

Summer Music Theatre Institute (SMTI) at Wagner College (ranked third best theatre department in the country by Princeton Review) gives high school students from around the country the opportunity to learn from theatre professionals about all aspects of music theatre performance. In a two week, on-campus intensive, students will receive rigorous, college caliber training in acting, singing and dancing in a supportive, professional environment. Students will also gain insights into the professional world of theatre in New York City through visits from experts in the field and trips to see Broadway productions. The week will culminate in a showcase of student performances for family, friends, the Wagner community and invited industry guests. SMTI aims to give students a learning experience that is professional and positive; rigorous training and serious fun.
Each day will include training in acting, singing and dancing, led by New York City theatre professionals. Acting workshops will include ensemble building, improvisation and scene study. Dance workshops will include ballet, jazz, tap and music theatre styles. Singing workshops will include group and individual sessions in various musical styles. In addition, workshops on the world of the processional actor will include sessions on auditioning techniques, headshots and resumes (with a visit from a headshot photographer), casting directors and agents. There will be several trips to see Broadway productions and to meet with Wagner alumni currently featured in Broadway productions such as West Side Story and Jersey Boys as well as to other significant New York City sights.
Applications for SMTI are due by May 1, 2011
Students are encouraged to apply early as there are a limited number of spots available.
