Sample Program 1: Bach and the Virtuosos at Dresden

Return to the Oleskiewicz-Schulenberg Duo home page.

Johann Sebastian Bach, the greatest composer in early eighteenth-century Germany, traveled frequently to Dresden, the capital city of Saxony. There he not only performed his own music but received inspiration and musical ideas from other leading musicians of the day. This program presents two of Bach's most stunning virtuoso works in the context of equally extraordinary music from the repertory of his contemporaries at Dresden, including an unpublished version of a sonata by Handel.

Sample Program 2: Sounds of a Royal Flute

The Baroque flute was a particular specialty of the royal court musicians of Paris, Berlin, and other European capitals. In this program we present music associated with two of the great royal patrons of late-Baroque Europe: Louis XIV of France, and Frederick II "the Great" of Prussia, who was himself a flutist and composer of note. It was for the latter that J. S. Bach wrote his famous Musical Offering, a collection of pieces from which we perform the sonata in C minor as a work for flute and harpsichord, following a performance practice common in the eighteenth century but rarely heard today.
