I presented a version of this paper at a conference at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1997. At the time I illustrated it with performances of several of the works discussed in the paper; Lucy Yates (soprano) and Claire Fontijn (flute) also participated. The paper was my response to what were then fashionable trends in musicology; although I subsequently revised the paper, it was never published, and I am no longer pursuing the issues raised in the paper. Nevertheless, I believe it is of some value, if only because it remains, surprisingly, one of very few feminist discussions of the music of Barbara Strozzi, as opposed to biographical studies. Moreover, I am unaware of any published discussions of Bach's Coffee Cantata that take up what seem to me the work's obvious points of interest from the perspective of feminist theory or gender studies.
