Over 3000 species of mosquitoes are described worldwide. In North America over 150 different species are found, and for New York State more than 60 species are documented. Mosquitoes are well-known as a blood sucking nuisance to humans and animals, but they can become a real danger, because some of them may transmit severe diseases. These pages are dedicated to describe the biology of mosquitoes at an elementary level, to outline the importance of mosquitoes for human health and to give some advice about ways of protection.
