Lori R. Weintrob is Associate Professor of History at Wagner College (New York). Dr. Weintrob received her Ph.D. from University of California, Los Angeles and her M.A. from Princeton University. Her research on civil society and public policy, gender and culture has been published in articles and books both here and in France—most recently, in the collections Démocratie, Solidartié et Mutualité (Paris, 1999) and Le Social dans la Ville en France et en Europe, 1750-1914 (Paris, 1996). She recently completed a sabbatical as visiting scholar at NYU where she was completing her book entitled “Mobilizing Citizens for Solidarity,” exploring the role of voluntary societies (and their celebrations!) in the origins of the French Welfare State. In addition, she is director of Project Pericles, a program emphasizing civic learning and participatory democracy. For her work with immigrant civic associations on Staten Island, including chairing a borough-wide “Celebrate Diversity” summit this fall, Dr. Weintrob was named 2003 Community Builder of the Year by the NY Center for Interpersonal Development.
