Dr. Mapy Chavez

Dr. Mapy Chavez is an Assistant Professor of Education at Wagner College.  Dr. Chavez specializes in special education, autism spectrum disorders, and teacher development.  Her research interests include the effects of an auditory matching repertoire on children’s echoic behavior, development of perspective taking skills, teacher instructional delivery, peer tutoring, and language acquisition, among other related areas.
 
Dr. Chavez has presented at many national and international conferences such as the Annual Convention of the Association for Behavior Analysis, and the Mexican Congress of Behavior Analysis.  Some of her publications include "The Use of Risperidone in Autism Spectrum Disorders" (Chavez, B., Chavez-Brown, M., & Rey, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 2006), "Perspective taking and theory of mind: Conceptual and empirical issues.  A complementary and pragmatic proposal" (Martin, M. J., Gomez Becerra, I., Chavez-Brown, M. & Greer, R. D., Revista de Salud Mental, 2006), and “Antecedent Selection: Comparing Simplified and Typical Verbal Antecedents for Children with Autism” (Journal of Behavioral Education, 2005).  She was one of the authors of the chapter “Key instructional components of effective peer tutoring for tutors, tutees, and peer observers”  in D. Moran & R. Malott (Eds.), Evidence-based educational methods (2004, pp. 295 – 333). New York: Academic Press. 

In early 2008, Dr. Chavez started an early intervencion center for children in the autism spectrum, in Lima, Peru.  Currently she is conducting research regarding early intervention for children in the autism spectrum using the principles of applied behavior analysis, as well as quality teacher training strategies.

Dr. Chavez has served Director of Graduate Programs in Education , as faculty advisor to Wagner College’s Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), as well as co-chair for the Diversity Action Council and the Internationalization Action Council
