1. Unplug your Ethernet cable from the back of your computer
2. Disable System Restore:
NOTE: System Restore is not available in Windows 2000 or NT. Skip this step
if you have Windows 2000 or NT.
Right Click "My Computer"
Select "Properties"
Select "System Restore"
Make sure "Turn off System Restore on all drives" is checked
Press "Apply"
Press "OK"
3. Install the Microsoft Patch:
On the CD provided double click the file called "mspatch.exe" If you have
Windows 2000, go to B5 in the Science Building to pick up an additional
floppy.
Click "Next"
Select "I Agree"
Click "Next"
Click "Finish" (Your computer may restart after this step)
4. Run the Blaster Worm Fix:
On the CD provided double click the file called "FixBlast.exe"
Click "Start" (The program may run for up to 20 minutes) When it is
completed, a box will come up saying how many infected files were found.
In some cases no files will be found, but this is still a necessary step.
You may get an error that a log file could not be created - ignore this.
Press OK. If the FixBlast program prompts you to install a Microsoft Patch,
select "NO." It may ask more than once.
5. Run the Welchia Worm Fix:
On the CD provided double click the file called "FixWelch.exe"
Click "Start" (The program may run for up to 20 minutes)When it is
completed, a box will come up saying how many infected files were found.
In some cases no files will be found, but this is still a necessary step.
You may get an error that a log file could not be created - ignore this.
Press OK. If the FixWelch program prompts you to install a Microsoft Patch,
select "NO." It may ask more than once.
6. Enable System restore
NOTE: System Restore is not available in Windows 2000 or NT. Skip this step
if you have Windows 2000 or NT.
Right Click "My Computer"
Select "Properties"
Select "System Restore"
Make sure "Turn off System Restore on all drives" is not checked
Press "Apply"
Press "OK"
At this point it is OK to plug your Ethernet cable back into your computer.
Please keep in mind that students that have left their Ethernet cables plugged
into their computers and have not followed the instructions above may be
permanently disconnected from the network.
