TIME MAGAZINE 'COLLEGE OF THE YEAR' FINALIST, 2001. Wagner College was one of the four finalists in the liberal arts colleges category for Time magazines' 2001 "College of the Year" accolade. That year's distinction was especially valuable to Wagner, because the focus was on "four colleges that know how to help newcomers survive and thrive." Wagner College was selected for the Top Four group because of its first-year program of small, interdisciplinary learning communities that give incoming freshman a "home" within the college from day one. The College of the Year results were published in Time magazine's Sept. 10, 2001 issue. They were overshadowed by the tragic events that unfolded the next day: the terrorists attacks that, a decade later, are still referred to simply as "9/11".
