EN 425: SENIOR SEMINAR
The senior seminar focuses on an area of study determined by the interests (often the research area) of the faculty member leading the seminar for that year, is delivered in seminar format at an advanced level, and is specifically designed as a culminating experience to the student's four-year study of literature.
EN 400: SENIOR REFLECTIVE TUTORIAL
The senior reflective tutorial is designed to engage students at the most advanced level of methodology, with the specific goal of helping students consciously reflect on the skills — both theoretical and practical — that they have developed as English majors. These are skills that are equally applicable to the general category of the liberally educated mind and to the more practical aspects of career orientation, whether related to professional school or more immediate careers like journalism, public relations, or the broad range of entrepreneurial experiences. Such skills may include (but are not confined to) critical analysis, cognitive development, written and oral expression, awareness of audience, sensitivity to style and voice, and understanding of the rhetorical techniques of persuasion and argument.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING SEGMENT:
Students are offered two options:
1. An internship-focused model for those thinking about careers in writing, public relations, journalism, business, law, nonprofit organizations or other corporate settings.
2. A research-based model that may be appealing to those thinking about professional school leading to an M.A., Ph.D., or law degree. The emphasis here is on what it means to prepare something for publication, as opposed to writing for a grade. Students interested in pursuing a lengthy creative writing project as preparation for applying to MFA programs may inquire about that option.
