1. When do I move into and out of my residence hall room? How does the move-in process work?
New students move into the Residence Halls during Orientation, which for Fall 2007 is Friday, August 24th. Thursday, August 23rd is an early move-in day to accommodate those coming from long distances and wishing to get a head start on the move-in process. First year students wishing to move-in on Thursday must have approval by the Residential Education office and there will be information about this day in the housing package sent to students. New Students shall receive an assigned time, between the hours of 8AM and 12 NOON, for the Friday Move-in day along with their room and roommate assignment package. When the new student and their moving entourage arrive on campus, they will be assisted by the residential education staff, orientation staff and various student volunteers, so that the move-in process goes as smoothly as possible.
For Upperclass students, the Fall 2007 return date is Sunday, August 26th. They will also receive assigned times for moving in to the residence halls. Cooperation with the college's moving-in process is appreciated. This process helps to avoid congestion, extended waiting periods, and other problems associated with moving in.
As for moving out, each semester there is a deadline for all students to leave the Residence Halls. Students are expected to leave Wagner 24 hours after their last scheduled final. For the Winter Intercession it is suggested that all valuables are taken home. Students needing to stay later should get permission from the Office of Residential Education by filling out the appropriate forms.
2. What should I bring with me to campus?
After receiving your housing assignments, you may want to correspond with your roommate to determine what furnishings (other than those items that will be used exclusively by you) each of you will be bringing to campus. Each residence hall room is equipped with a bed, dresser, desk, and chair for each student. It is recommended that students bring with them extra lamps (no halogen lamps are allowed). It is important to come equipped with belongings that will make your room as comfortable as possible; however, you should not bring everything that you own. Many items for your room are sold in the Wagner College Bookstore.
The Office of Residential Education works in conjunction with an organization, On Campus Marketing (OCM) to provide linens for students. This service sells linens to students at the beginning of the academic school year. Information regarding this service is sent to students' homes as part of the room assignment package. If you have questions about this service you can check out their web address: www.oncampusmarketing.com or email any questions to: info@ocmemail.com.
We also work with Cecil Distributors who provide microfridges. These units have a microwave attached to a refrigerator and is in accordance with Residential Education requirements. Please see the Moving In section of this website for details about suggested items to bring for the residence halls, as well as prohibited items.
3. Are there any additional student fees for living on campus, apart from the "room and board" charge?
The room and board charge of $7,950 covers one academic year (two semesters in the 2005-2006 year) in a double room in one of the residence halls. There are no additional housing fees above this figure.
There are designated single rooms that are an additional $900 per semester for the 2005-2006 academic year. These are available through the Lottery system for upperclass students and are limited for incoming students.
If a student wishes to stay in the Residence Halls over the winter intercession or through the summer, they will be charged a minimum fee. These students should fill out the appropriate request forms and return them to the Office of Residential Education by the designated deadline.
4. Are members of the residential education staff available to assist students in the residence halls?
A member of the Residential Education staff (Resident Assistants who are undergraduate students or Assistant Resident Directors who are graduate students, and Resident Directors who are full-time Wagner administrators) lives on each floor of all three of Wagner's residence halls as well as amongst the students living in the Grymes Hill apartments. RAs, Resident Directors, and Assistant Resident Directors serve as excellent resources for students living in the residence halls, and provide programming for each floor.
The Residential Education staff serves a number of purposes. Their main function is to create community among the students in the residence halls. They do this through programming and organizing activities on a floor and campus-wide level. These staff members also monitor the buildings and assist in the maintenance, discipline, and counseling aspects of Residential Education.
5. What are my meal plan options? Is this covered in "room and board"?
Any student that resides on campus must subscribe to a meal plan. The standard room and board plans include the 15-meal plan. Students subscribing to a meal plan also receive “Flexi-cash”, a declining balance credit card system that can be applied towards purchases at the College’s snack bar, the Hawk’s Nest. Students are able to switch plans during the year. Students may change to either 10 or 19 meals per week.
For questions regarding the meal plan at Wagner College, please address them to Chartwells@wagner.edu.
6. How does the phone system work? Are there any special fees?
Every student has his/her own phone line and number and receives an individual phone bill. Students only pay for calls that they make, and there are no additional monthly service fees. All on-campus calls are free. You must bring your own phone, but, as there is free voice mail, you do not need to bring an answering machine.
Wagner College works in collaboration with PaeTec Communication and CampusLink to provide students a quality phone system with individualized billing, voicemail, a personal PIN number for security and competitive long-distance rates. If you have questions or concerns regarding the Wagner's telephone service you can call 1-800-962-4772 or e-mail your questions at www.campuslink.paetec.com
7. What happens if my roommate and I do not get along with each other?
Any conflicts between roommates are handled individually, with the help of the Residential Education staff. If a resolution to the conflict is not found through mediation, then a student may change rooms with the assistance of the Residential Education office. If students want to change rooms or roommates for any reason, they are required to first work with the Residential Education staff in their hall. Please see the Residential Education Guidebook for more details about room change policies and procedures.
Each semester, Wagner College implements a room freeze. This is a period of time to allow all departments to get their information in order. It also allows students to settle in to their housing assignment. Many times students jump to erroneous, hasty decisions without giving time to become accustomed to a new environment and a new roommate. The transition to living away from home and getting to know the different habits of a new roommate takes time and compromise to work. We ask that students recognize differences and celebrate those unique qualities of their roommates and compromise to create a comfortable living atmosphere for all involved. We recognize that not all roommate pairings will work, but we do ask for the parties involved to act in a mature and responsible manner to try to work out their differences, rather than immediately requesting a room switch.
8. Can I live on campus for all four years?
Housing is guaranteed for all four years as long as you meet the required housing deadlines. Housing Deadlines and Lottery processes are well publicized and occur in the Spring semester to select housing for the following semester.
