Below are questions frequently asked by incoming students. We hope you find the answers helpful, if there is still a question that is not answered in the New Student website, please contact the Center for Career and Academic Development Center or the Admissions Office .
Q: Is Math 110 the right course for me?
A: Most first year students will take Math 110, College Mathematics, to meet their Liberal Arts Core requirement. If you have taken an advanced level of math in high school (Calculus or AP Math), you may be eligible to take Math 121, Pre-Calculus. Taking an advanced level of Math at Wagner College is important if you are going to pursue a major in the natural sciences, math, or computer science.
Q: When will I get my bill?
A: Early July.
Q: How do I get a job on campus?
A: During orientation, attend the session held by the Financial Aid office on obtaining a job on campus. At this meeting the proper procedures for on-campus employment will be discussed. The Financial Aid office keeps the listing of available positions on campus. For more information on College Work Study, please see the Financial Aid section of this website.
Q: When can transfer students register for courses?
A: Accepted students who have paid their deposit may register as soon as they have received their transfer evaluation letter from the Registrar’s Office. Call the Academic Advisement Center to schedule an appointment, either in person or a phone appointment, with an Advisor (718-390-3416). Accepted students who have not yet paid their deposit should do so at the Admissions Office first, then make an appointment at the Academic Advisement Center.
Q: When will I get my housing and roommate assignment?
A: Late July.
Q: What will my email address be?
A: Wagner College email addresses are composed of your first name.last name followed by @wagner.edu. Punctuation marks in a name are not included. Email addresses will become active for new students sometime in May. The initial password for all student accounts will be your student ID number. In addition, please note that if bringing a computer to campus, you need to register the computer at the Spiro Computer Center.
Q: Do I need to attend Orientation weekend if I am a transfer student and I’ve already registered for classes?
A: Yes! Attendance at Orientation weekend is required of ALL new students, and it will provide you with information that is vital to your successfultransition. During Orientation you will meet faculty and peers, learn about academic policies, student organizations, and campus safety, get your Wagner ID card, parking pass, and much more.
Q: Who will be my advisor?
A: For first year students, your RFT (Reflective Tutorial) professor is your advisor. Transfer students will be assigned an advisor in their major department, or if a major has not been declared an advisor from the Academic Advisement Center (AAC) will be assigned. The staff of the AAC are available to assist all students, although your faculty advisor should be your best resource. You will first meet with your advisor during Orientation in August.
Q: Can I bring a car to campus as a first year student?
A: Yes, make sure to register your car by filling out the paperwork sent to you in your information folder. For more information, please see the Public Safety section of this website.
Q: What is the summer reading program?
A: The summer reading program is a chance for incoming students and faculty to read a thought provoking book that will lead to discussions and provide a common theme through-out the learning communities. Students will use the book for inclass discussions and/or tests and other activities.
Q: Can I bring a microwave?
A: Yes! The microwave size should be no larger than 550 watts.
Q: Can I bring a refrigerator?
A: Yes! The refrigerator size should be between 32" - 36" high and no larger than 4cu. ft.
Q: Do the closets have doors?
A: The closets in HVH do not have closet doors. We suggest that students bring a tension rod to fit the dimensions of the closet. 7' 6" X 3' 3". Students either use a sheet to drape over the tension rod or they can use a shower curtain.
Q: If I live in Guild Hall what type of air conditioner can I bring?
A: Size for the air conditioner for Guild Hall is no larger than 6,000 BTU's and the dimension should fit window size 28 1/2" wide X 17" high.
Q: Can I move in early?
A: Early move in must be requested by email to Reslife@wagner.edu and requests will be answered in the same way, by email. Students must have extreme circumstances to be considered for early move in.
Q: Can I bring bed risers?
A: Use of bed elevators are permitted. However, if students are bunking their beds, these cannot be used. Bed Elevators can be purchased at stores like JC Penney, Linens N Things, Bed Bath and Beyond. The height varies because of the height of the bedpost.
Q: What precautions can I take when bringing a laptop to school?
A: If students are using laptop computers, a computer lock is recommended. They can be purchased at stores like Best Buy and Radio Shack.
Q: What are the room sizes in Harborview?
A: There are two room sizes in Harborview. Average room sizes are 10' 6" X 16' 6" and 12' X 14'.
Q: What are the room sizes in Towers?
A: Average room size in Towers ending in 01, 02, 06, 07, 09, 10, 14 and 15 are 12" X 10' 6". Numbers 03, 08, 11, and 16 are 12' X 15'. Single room size 02 & 13 are 11' X 9' 7" and 04 & 12 are 11' X 9' 2".
Q: What are the room sizes in Guild Hall?
A: Room size in Guild Hall are 14' X15'
Q: What do I do if I want to switch rooms once I move in?
A: All room assignments are set for the first 2 weeks of school. There are no changes made during this freeze period. After 2 weeks, students can pick up room switch forms from the Residence Life Office. Once received, we will try to accommodate your request as soon as possible.
Q: Do I have to purchase a meal plan?
A: No, a meal plan is built into your room and board charges. As a resident you are provided with 19 meals a week and $20 in flexi-cash per semester. If you would like to upgrade your meal plan to one of Block plans, you can do so by contacting dining services at 781-390-3246 or you can check out their website: http://www.dineoncampus.com/wagner.
Q: When will I get my schedule?
A: Academic schedules will be available at the end of July. Your schedule will be e-mailed to your Wagner e-mail account, so start checking your e-mail on a regular basis.
Q: Can I pre-order my books?
A: Yes, first year students can now pre-order their books online at: http://wagner1.bkstore.com/bkstore/content. When you pre-order your books you need to have the ID number and section number of the course. You will also need to specify if you would like to purchase a new or used book. You will need to provide a major credit card in order to pre-order your books. Pre-ordered books will be available starting Orientation Weekend.
