community agencies to deepen students’ volunteerism

Dean Julia M. Barchitta, 65

   Dean Julia M. “Julie” (Sinisgalli) Barchitta, born Nov. 5, 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at her home on Staten Island, surrounded by family and friends, following a long battle with cancer. She was 65. Julie had been a member of the Wagner College family since enrolling as an undergraduate in 1960.

'Master Class' 'a great piece of theater'; runs thru Feb. 28

    Terrence McNally’s “Master Class” opened for a two-week run at Wagner College's Stage One studio theater on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Stage One is located on the West Campus next to Seahawk Stadium. The show will run through Feb. 28.
   Directed by Fred Tessler, "Master Class" will run for two weeks: Feb. 18-21 and Feb. 25-28 (Wednesday through Saturday both weeks) at 8 p.m., with no matinees.

Advance reviews 'Threepenny Opera'; runs thru March 8

    Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “Threepenny Opera,” directed by Drew Scott Harris, opened on Wednesday, Feb. 25 for a two-week run in the Main Stage theater at Wagner College.
    From Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 25-28 and March 4-7, the curtain will go up at 8 p.m., with matinees playing at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8. Ticket prices are:

Senator Schumer holds press conference at 4:30 p.m.

The public is invited to join President Richard Guarasci at a press conference this afternoon on the campus of Wagner College with U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.). The senator will highlight the new $2,500 college tuition tax credit that is part of the economic stimulus bill signed into law earlier this week by President Barack Obama.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on the Sutter Oval in front of Main Hall, with an alternate site in Spiro Hall, Room 2, should outdoor conditions prove inhospitable.

Merck researcher gives seminar on drug development Feb. 23

On Monday, Feb. 23 at 2:40 p.m. in Spiro 5, Dr. Sudha Warrier, a senior research scientist at Merck Research Laboratories, will be giving a seminar on “From the Lab Bench to the Bedside, the Gestation and Delivery of a Drug.”  She comes to Wagner at the invitation of Dr. Ammini Moorthy. This seminar is sponsored by the Academic and Cultural Enhancement program and the Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society.  Dr.

Prof. Jean Halley delivers 'Last Lecture' Feb. 24

    Wagner College sociology professor Jean Halley will deliver her “Last Lecture” on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in Guild Hall’s Beisler Lounge. The lecture is free, and the public is invited.
    In the “Last Lecture” series, the speaker is given the supposition that this is their absolute last lecture. In each lecture, members of Wagner College’s faculty and staff share with students what they think is the most important advice they can give, based on their own personal and professional life experiences.

Music Dept. stages 'Tribute to Black Music' Feb. 24

    On Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 9 p.m., students and faculty of Wagner College will join with several distinguished area musicians to celebrate the rich legacy of African-American music in the fourth annual “Tribute to Black Music.” The concert will take place in the Campus Hall Performance Center. There is no admission charge, though a free-will offering will be taken. The public is invited.

Cocktail hour: 7 to 8 p.m. in the Union Atrium

Dinner, entertainment, silent auction, and raffles: 8 p.m. to midnight in the Union dining room

Individual tickets: $20 each

Choir gives tour sendoff concert March 1

    On Sunday, March 1 at 4 p.m., the Wagner College Choir will inaugurate its 2009 concert tour with a sendoff concert at Christ Lutheran Church, 121 Cleveland Ave., Great Kills Staten Island 10308. The concert precedes a seven-city tour of Florida by the 30-voice choir under the direction of Roger Wesby, Wagner College’s director of choral activities.
    The choir’s repertoire is quite diverse, said Wesby.
