Archive - 2006 - Archived News ItemNovember 28thWagner Earns NCATE Approval for Education ProgramThe department of education at Wagner College has received full accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), college President Richard Guarasci announced today. “Accreditation by NCATE means that Wagner’s Department of Education which offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare future teachers and administrators meet the most rigorous and most widely accepted standards in the country,” President Guarasci said. NCATE accredits about 625 institutions nationally. The preparation of teachers has been a key component of Wagner’s curriculum since the college was founded in 1883 in Rochester, N.Y. The program began significant expansion with Wagner’s relocation to Staten Island in 1918. Today about 180 of the college’s 1960 undergraduates major in education. This is a free family/community event designed to strengthen respect and understanding among different cultures that call Staten Island their home. The cultures of Ghana, Norway, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic will be featured at the festivities which will include cultural exhibits, entertainment, food, and fun. The event is sponsored by the Mosaic Coalition - a collaboration between the New York Center for Interpersonal Development and Wagner College. November 1stTreble Choir and Chamber Singers Fall ConcertFall Choral Concert Sunday, November 5, 3 PM Wagner College Treble Concert Choir and Chamber Singers offer a concert of varied repertoire which pays tribute to both the Lutheran Musical Heritage and the Italian Musical Heritage. The concert will include works from the former by Johann Sebastian Bach, Heinrich Schütz, Hans Leo Hassler, Johann Walther and Felix Mendelssohn, and from the latter, by Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Luca Marenzio and others. The Chamber Singers will preview the Villancicos rebeldes of Max Lifchitz which they will sing later this month on a special Retrospective Concert of the composer's works in Manhattan. The program will also include part songs by Charles Wood and Gustav Holst, music from the American Musical Theater and spirituals. October 19th2006 French Film Festival at Wagner CollegeThe Department of Modern Languages at Wagner College will be screening five recent French films between October 23 and October 27, 2006 during their 2nd Tournees French Film Festival. All screenings will take place in the Spiro Communications Center, but specific room assignments vary. (see below) The festival is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture (CNC). The Tournees grant is also sponsored by The Florence Gould Foundation, the Grand Marnier Foundation and the Franco-American Cultural Fund. October 10thUrban analyst to speak at Wagner CollegeUrban analyst Joel Kotkin will speak on the future of cities at Wagner College's Grymes Hill campus on Wednesday.
