Commercial Revitalization and Promotion Program

Wagner College and Councilman McMahon’s Commercial Revitalization and Promotion Program

May 9, 2006, Staten Island, NY…Wagner College and Councilman Michael McMahon will present the results of the Wagner College/NYC Small Business Services Promotion and Revitalization program on Thursday, May 11, 2006 from 10am-11am in the Spiro Gymnasium’s Hall of Fame room.

This is the second year the Councilman has secured funding for this collaborative effort with the New York City Department of Small Business Services and Wagner.

“This funding has been used in an incredible way in building this partnership,” Councilman McMahon said. “It not only helped educate the students but brought a fantastic benefit to our local communities.”

The program pairs students from the Wagner Economics Department, under the guidance of  Professor Wade Hudson of Wagner’s Economic Department, with various local development corporations (LDC’s) to collaborate on a variety of economic promotion and development projects as well as several commercial revitalization efforts.

“We are mindful of the fact that Wagner is part of Staten Island and we encourage our students to do the best they can, using they skills they have acquired here, to serve the borough and the greater New York City area,” Wagner Provost Devorah Lieberman said.

Student participants worked with the Downtown Staten Island Council, the Northfield Local development Corporation and the West Brighton Local Development Corporation on the projects as part of Wagner’s civic engagement requirements.

Representatives from the Wagner College’s Economic Department, student interns, Downtown Staten Island Council, Northfield L.D.C., West Brighton L.D.C., and NYC’s Small Business office will also be in attendance.
