The Wagner College football team established its leadership council to recognize a gifted group of student athletes that can bridge the gap between players and coaches and lead the Seahawks on and off the field.
Since the 2005 season ended, the council has moved its gap-bridging abilities outside the confines of head coach Walt Hameline's office.
On March 31, the Wagner College football leadership council, along with Hameline and assistant coach Dan Conley visited the pediatrics ward of the Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.
Junior running back Warren Barnett organized the visit and was joined by teammates and council members Jeremy Spinks, Antonio Pinder, Ein Williams, William Clancy, Joseph Kinard, Chris Allen and Kevin Maroney.
"Ultimately I think our guys got something out of it," Conley said in a press released issued by the college. "When they spend time (at the hospital) it is really an eye opener across the board from football to social life and it was really positive."
The players met with children from ages two through 15 and their parents and distributed gift bags, media guides, and footballs. The council members took the time to visit and speak with children individually. They also posed for pictures and signed autographs.
The council focuses itself on the development of student-athletes' characters and bases its model on commitment, loyalty, the pride of its members and the guidance they provide the rest of the Seahawk players.
