Jewish Culture Series Kickoff Lecture ApproachingFor Immediate Release: WAGNER COLLEGE’S JEWISH CULTURE SERIES KICKOFF LECTURE APPROACHING Co-sponsored by The Chai Society, JCC of Staten Island and ACE (Academic and Cultural Enrichment) at Wagner College Staten Island, NY – Wagner College’s Jewish Culture Series will be having its 1st lecture of the Fall 2006 semester hosted by Rabbi Abraham Unger of Congregation Ahavath Israel on Tuesday, September 12 at 8:00pm, in Spiro 5. Rabbi Unger is Scholar in Residence at Wagner College and teaches in the Department of Government and Politics. The lecture will be entitled, American Jewish Philanthropy - “Anarchists or Visionaries: The New Jewish Philanthropists,” and the speaker will be Richard Marker. Richard Marker has been a chief executive of a philanthropic foundation, a professor, a management consultant for both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, and a senior executive of an international not-for-profit. Currently, Marker serves as an advisor to foundations, independent funders, and not-for-profit organizations, and is a Senior Fellow in Philanthropy at NYU's George Heyman Jr. Center for Philanthropy. He specializes in strategic philanthropy and planning. Additionally, Marker has served as Vice President for International Affairs of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. Much of his previous career has been connected to higher education. He worked with Hillel for many years at Rutgers, Hofstra, and Brown universities, and as head of its Chicago based mid-west office. When appointed to Brown in 1971, Marker was the first university-employed Jewish chaplain in the Ivy League. A Philadelphia native, he has academic, rabbinic, and management degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Brown University.
