Rodger Hurley, 70, of Granville, N.Y., husband of Wagner College English professor Ann Hurley, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010.
Flags are flying at half staff this week in Washington County, N.Y. to honor Mr. Hurley, who had just begun his second term as supervisor of the Town of Granville. Hurley was highly esteemed by colleagues on both the Town Board and the county Board of Supervisors. He had lived in Granville since 1969.
In 1962-63, Hurley served in the Green Berets in Vietnam. Educated at Brown and Rutgers, Hurley retired in 2004 from a 30-year career in education, community development and community service, both here and abroad. From 1995 until his retirement, Hurley was the National Projects Director for AmeriCorps.
President of the Hartford (N.Y.) Central School board and a member of the Adirondack Community College board in the late Seventies, Hurley unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Rep. Jerry Solomon (R-Queensbury) for his congressional seat in 1980. In 2006, Hurley defeated a longtime incumbent to win the Granville supervisor’s job.
Rodger Hurley attended South Granville Congregational Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and served as a volunteer in the Granville Engine and Hose Fire Department. Until his election as supervisor, Hurley also served as a citizens’ representative on the editorial board of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Glens Falls Post Star.
A memorial service for family members and close friends will be held on Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. in the South Granville Congregational Church. A reception will follow at the volunteer fire house in Hartford.
Condolences can be sent to Ann Hurley, 155 Hulett Rd., Granville, NY 12832, or e-mail her at ahurley@wagner.edu.
