Astronomer Harry Shipman to speak Feb. 5, 6

            Harry Shipman, an astronomy professor at the University of Delaware, will be lecturing at Wagner College Feb. 5 and 6. The public is invited.

            On Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m., Shipman will be lecturing on “Science and Religion” in Spiro Hall, Room 5.

            On Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 11:45 a.m., Shipman will lecture on “Bio-Astronomy and Extraterrestrial Life” in Spiro Hall, Room 2.

            Harry Shipman is the Annie Jump Cannon professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Delaware. His contributions to teaching at the national level include six years as the American Astronomical Society’s education officer.

            Shipman has published several books, including “Black Holes and the Infinite Universe” (1979), “Humans in Space: 21st Century Frontiers” (1989) and “White Dwarfs: Cosmological and Galactic Probes” (2005), and he is the author or co-author of over 300 scientific publications on white dwarfs. He has received grants from the NSF, NASA, and the Guggenheim and Templeton foundations, and he has observing access to many NASA facilities, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

            Harry Shipman’s lectures at Wagner College are being co-sponsored by the Shapley Foundation.
