“The City and Beyond,” an exhibition of prints and etchings by Karen Whitman and Richard Pantell, is a must-see contemporary show at the Wagner College Gallery on Grymes Hill. On display through March 28, the exhibition features masterfully executed block prints and etchings by these award-winning printmakers from the Woodstock artists colony.

Among many other images inspired by New York City are prints by each artist created especially for “Tide Lines,” a previous exhibition of new prints from the Staten Island waterfront that was shown at the Noble Maritime Museum in 2006. Exhibited in display cases are proofs from multicolor block-print editions that will show the progress of the prints at each stage of creation. The artists etch their own plates, cut their own blocks and do their own printing on both antique and modern presses.

Whitman and Pantell’s work can be found in such collections as the British Museum, the Zimmerli Art Museum, the New York Public Library, the New York Transit Museum, the New-York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York and the Butler Institute of American Art.

Wagner College Gallery is located in the Wagner Union building, just off the atrium. The college is located on Grymes Hill, Staten Island, on Howard Avenue at Campus Road. For more information about this exhibition, call (718) 390-3192 or e-mail bmurphy@wagner.edu.
