Science students display 5 years’ work in ‘Hormesis’ exhibit
Wagner College science students are displaying conference-style poster presentations of 5 years’ worth of research into the effects of hormesis on the brains of zebrafish. (“Hormesis” is the term for generally favorable biological responses to low exposures to toxins and other stressors.) The “Hormesis” exhibition in the Spotlight Gallery of Wagner College’s Horrmann Library is open through April 10.
Guided by Wagner College biology professor Zoltan Fulop, the work on hormesis represented in the Spotlight Gallery exhibition has been presented at several collegiate science conferences over the life of the 5-year project, including the Eastern Colleges Science Conference, the Metropolitan Association College and University Biologists Conference, the Sigma Xi scientific research society, and the New England Science Symposium at Harvard Medical School.
“Our students always get awards,” said Fulop. “With 360 students attending one of these events, only 16 will get awards — and Wagner always brings home 3 or 4, year after year.”
The nature of the “Hormesis” exhibition is such that many of the posters may make more sense to a nonscientist when explained by the students themselves. Students will be present in the Spotlight Gallery to do just that between 6 and 7 p.m. on three dates:
- Thursday, March 27
- Thursday, March 3
- Tuesday, March 8
Groups that would like to make arrangements for a guided tour of the “Hormesis” exhibition should call Stephani Rollizo at 718-390-3103, or e-mail her at stephanie.rollizo@wagner.edu.
The Spotlight Gallery is open during the Horrmann Library’s normal operating hours, which are:
- Monday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- Thursday, 8 a.m. to midnight
- Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.
While the college is on spring break, from March 17-20, the library will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed over Easter Weekend, March 21-23. Normal hours will resume on Monday, March 24.
