Barbara Gigante

Barbara Gigante’s new venture and challenge has been negotiating with Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) to open a child care center, exclusively for its employees. After several years and completion of renovations, KidSmart, a Learning Child Care Center, will hopefully open its doors this September 2006.

Previously, Barbara was the founder and executive director of Celebration for Kids Learning Center, Concord. The progressive school, which was located at 75 Skyline Dr., provided children ages six weeks to 10 years with an extraordinary education but closed November 11, 2005. Created in 1993, under the direction of Barbara’s own special vision, the year-round school operated under the Bank Street College of Education philosophy of providing a “child-centered” or “developmental-interaction approach” to learning. The program didn’t follow the traditional academic school curriculum. Instead, it allowed children to be very active participants in the educational process through opportunities that provide room for physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth. Additionally, it was the only infant-toddler school and also only the third pre-school on Staten Island that had been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Before she became a teacher extraordinaire, Barbara worked at the Bank Nationale de Paris as a secretary followed by an assistant trader with Cantor Fitzgerald. Very involved in her community, she is a member of the Democratic County Committee, the Professional Early Educators of Richmond County and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Barbara graduated from Marquette University, Milwalkee, Wis., with a major in French and a minor in Elementary Education. She has her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education, and received her Master of Business Administration from Wagner College in 2000. She and her husband Robert, Staten Island Supreme Court Justice and former Island Democratic Party Chairman, moved to the Island in 1972 and have four children, Robert A., Giana, Chad, and Christian.

Vito J. Fossella

Vito J. Fossella, father of Staten Island Congressman Vito Fossella Jr., has re-shaped the face of Staten Island. As President of Land Planning and Engineering Consultants, P.C., he is involved in the planning, design and supervision of the construction of small and large scale residential, commercial and industrial developments including site and subdivision analysis. Some of his better-known projects include Costco, United Artist Movie Theatre on Forest Avenue, the Shops at Forest Avenue, the award-winning Adco Electric building, The Hilton Garden Inn, and other buildings by developer Richard Nicotra such as 900, 1000, 1100 and 1200 South Avenue.

Prior to his present job, Vito held various positions in his quest to better New York City such as Chairman/Vice Chairman/Commissioner of the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals during the Ed Koch administration; Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Marine and Aviation during the Abe Beame administration; and Richmond County Boro Engineer for the NYC Dept. of Highways during the John Lindsay administration.

Vito has contributed much of his time to various community organizations including the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC), Staten Island University Hospital’s board of trustees, and the American Parkinson Disease Association.

Vito graduated from Newark College of Engineering in 1964 with a BS in Civil Engineering and earned his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from New York University in 1971. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Civil Law Honoris Rausa in 1982 from St. John’s University. From the late 60’s to the early 80’s he shared his knowledge as a part-time adjunct professor at both St. John’s University and the College of Staten Island (CSI).
