Prof. Regan '80 wins national award

Claire Regan ’80, an assistant professor of journalism at Wagner College, was given the prestigious Award of Excellence earlier this month by the Society for News Design. Professor Regan won her award in the Page One category for the July 4, 2010 front page she designed for the Staten Island Advance (seen here) where she is associate managing editor. The award was given at SND’s annual workshop in St. Louis, Mo., held Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.
Regan’s prize-winning page was also published in the book, “SND32: The Best of News Design, 32nd Edition,” by the Society for News Design.
Regan is the immediate past president of the New York State Associated Press and serves on the Executive Council of the Deadline Club, the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Deadline Club had previously honored Regan for the same front-page design singled out by the Society for News Design, recognizing her at its annual award banquet in May at the Waldorf Astoria.
In 2004, Regan was named a Poynter Ethics Fellow by the Poynter Institute, St. Petersburg, Fla., a school dedicated to the support of journalistic excellence with classes on its main campus, in newsrooms and online. As an Ethics Fellow, Regan answers questions on journalistic ethics submitted to Poynter by journalism students at colleges across North America.
Professor Regan has taught journalism courses at Wagner College since 1985. She has long served as the faculty adviser to the Wagnerian, our student newspaper. Regan also supervises the intern program at the Staten Island Advance, which currently provides on-the-job experiential learning for five Wagner College students.
