FROM THE SITE CREATOR:
The Visual Art at Wagner College website was initially created to fulfill a Wagner College Honors Program requirement. This program, in addition to other prerequisites, asks that seniors complete a thesis-style project. The Honors project takes various forms and ranges from formal papers, to a student art show, a collection of poems or a musical recital. Because of a strong interest in fine art, and the need for a consolidated space to grow interest and reach out to the Wagner community by highlighting visual art events, I decided to create a website that would fulfill this want.
While initially conceived as a more student-based website focusing on students, I realized that I also wanted to incorporate Staten Island and Manhattan art events to interest students in the website. While my aim is to still better integrate student involvement within the web space, I really enjoyed researching and choosing different art events, openings and organizations to highlight for the website. I visited different art exhibitions and shows, and all of those that are listed in the website I have either visited myself or are spaces I am interested in visiting.
In addition to visiting several art shows and conducting preliminary research, I also reached out to Wagner faculty and staff (such as Bill Murphy and Marilyn Kiss) to ask if they had any ideas or would want to publish anything specific in the visual art website. I additionally contacted Lee Manchester and Jude VandenHeuvel regarding art press materials, and Information Technology, respectively. Lee provided me with several links as examples of art news and event pages that Wagner already creates. And I met with Jude to discuss the technology of the website itself and its construction. I decided to use a Wagner design template, so that the site would have a more cohesive look and feel, as if it were actually a part of the Wagner website.
After receiving IT training, I began to construct the website, performing additional research to fulfill the information I needed. All of the text and images were created, edited and formatted according to my vision for the web space. More than just an Honor's project now, I view this project as an actual proposal to Wagner; an idea that they adopt this page to fulfill the need for more "visible" visual art at Wagner College. I propose that this become a student-managed web page for Wagner students who want to learn more about the world of art, at Wagner and beyond.
